Reflections on the Film Kokuhou and the Importance of Diabetes Awareness

August 29th, 2025Blog

Today, I had the opportunity to watch the recently released film Kokuhou (National Treasure), a powerful human drama that explores the struggles and triumphs of a kabuki actor rising to prominence against all odds. Beyond its beautiful storytelling and artistic performances, the film struck me most deeply with its honest and unflinching depiction of illness. In particular, the story of how diabetes affected the lives of its characters was both moving and thought-provoking, reminding me that art can also be a mirror to some of society’s most pressing realities.

Diabetes is not just a medical condition confined to a few—it is a profound and widespread challenge faced by millions around the world. Whether in Japan or abroad, in the past or today, diabetes remains one of the most serious chronic diseases, influencing not only the health of individuals but also the well-being of families and communities. Watching the film, I could not help but think of the countless patients who live with the complications of diabetes every day, and how their struggles are often invisible to those around them until crisis strikes.

The depiction in Kokuhou—a character forced to face amputation, another collapsing under the weight of illness—resonates because it is tragically real. These are not rare or exaggerated events, but experiences that reflect the lived reality of many. It reminded me of how urgent it is for us to talk about diabetes openly, to address the misconceptions surrounding it, and to emphasize both prevention and support. The movie does not offer medical advice, of course, but it does something equally important: it raises awareness and empathy, making the audience pause to reflect on what this disease really means.

For this reason, I would encourage everyone to watch Kokuhou if you have the chance. Beyond appreciating the artistry of kabuki and the moving performances, the film invites us to confront the reality of diabetes with a renewed sense of awareness. By watching, reflecting, and discussing, we can each contribute—however small—to fostering understanding and perhaps inspiring action. If the film leaves even one person more mindful about their health, or more compassionate toward those living with chronic illness, then its impact extends far beyond the stage.
